Best LED Flashlight

Your information source for LED flashlights

Welcome to Best Led Flashlights. Here you will be able to find the useful information on the best led flashlights and their top suppliers. Here is a look at LEDs and some popular LED flashlights to include Dorcy, Coast and Surefire.

The LED
The LED (light-emitting diode) was invented in Russia in the 1920s but did not see their first commercial use in the US until 1962. Until recently, technical and cost challenges have prevented them from widespread use for lighting in flashlights and other devices.

The Advantages of LED Flashlights
LEDs are far more efficient than traditional lighting so they use less energy and produce less heat. This is especially advantageous in devices like flashlights where the power source must be carried. The lower power consumption allows for longer use, lower costs and more convenience.

LEDs are more durable than traditional light sources. They are most resistant to shocks such as being dropped and generally last much longer in normal usage. In fact, many LEDs are guaranteed for the life of the flashlight.

Furthermore, LED flashlights can be made in smaller sizes and have faster switching While incandescent bulbs take a few seconds to reach full brightness, LED flashlights give full luminescence almost immediately.

The major disadvantage of LEDs is that they are more expensive than traditional lighting. However, this cost premium is rapidly shrinking as LEDs become more widespread in flashlights and other devices.

The bottom line
While the best LED flashlights will cost a little more, their many advantages and versatility make them worth any extra costs. Besides, extra purchase costs can easily be recouped since LEDs will last longer and require fewer replacement bulbs (if any) and batteries.

Measuring brightness
Brightness should be a major consideration when buying a LED flashlight. While one obviously needs enough brightness for the job on hand, too much brightness is overkill and can be counterproductive in many cases. Most LED flashlights are measured in lumens with 10 to 100 lumens being the most common.

  • 10 lumens is on the low side but enough for many purposes
  • 30 lumens is a rough average and enough for the majority of purposes
  • 90 lumens are common for special super bright flashlights used for special purposes such as police work.

Some LEDs are measured in watts which can be difficult to compare to lumens. Since watts are a measure of input of power and there is no set standard to compare watts to lumens, different manufacturers claim a wide range of lumens per watt. However, 30 lumens per watt is a good assumption unless otherwise stated.

Batteries
With their high efficiency, the best LED flashlights generally do not need larger, heavier batteries. Configurations with several AAA batteries are common and work well.
